What Customers Say About SAS Survival Guide Handbook (Collins Gem):

I didn't realize that it was pocket sized, and would have preferred to purchase the handbook first, pocket sized travel edition later. I purchased the survival guide and I'm pleased with it.

Alot(). Many useful diagrams including plants, animal tracks, how to skin an animal, fire building and cooking, knots and ropes, map reading, traps, weapons, first aid, etc. of information in a small book. A great book for someone who likes the outdoors and survival techniques. Compact enough for pocket/backpack.

The information is well-organized and very helpful. Some have said the text is too small, it's not. The illustrations are very well done and help you to easily understand how to set traps, build shelters, identify edible plants, etc. It contains much of the common sense stuff you might forget as well as everything you could possibly think of to help you survive in the wilderness alone. It's perfectly readable and clear. I'm including this book in my survival pouch (fanny pack) and bug-out bag (backpack).

I think the small size actually let me digest the information in smaller douses. This really is the poorest proofing I have come across lately in a book. I plan on buying the larger size for the shelf and throwing this in my go-bag for emergencies (you never know these days).

As a graphic designer, used to proofing type (as much as possible) from clients, there were so many spelling and proofing mistakes that it made it really hard to concentrate and not look for more mistakes. Sometimes it was clocking in at one mistake every two or three tiny pages. There were blatant misspellings, words that run together meant to have a space, and juxtaposed letters in the middle of a sentence.

First off, this is a great guide, laid out nicely, and is pocket sized. These are all base survival tactics, but there are a lot of good ones, and I even built a few things while camping that I memorized in one reading of the book. The reason why this book gets two stars are the frequent spelling and proofreading errors. That alone is a massive failure by the publisher, and I'll be contacting them to see if there is a newer version without all the distracting mistakes.

Reading the small version wasn't too bad, I just put it in the bathroom and read 5-10 pages at a time. The illustrations were great, the layout was great, and it was refreshing to read.

And at about 1" thick, it is not anything that I would ever throw in my backpack. It's small. Overall, I don't feel like this is a good purchase for me. I'm not going to be in all those spots at once. It is painful to read this at home. My first problem with the book is the size. If it was better sectioned, more thorough, I'd take it apart and take it with me. Nice if the book was full size.

Not very good. It is a very comprehensive book, not too much detail, but enough in some places. But it's not. It's a nice high level survival guide. No.

But in something to take everywhere. If it was full size, with more detail, I'd use it as a reference before heading out. But really, it's not that useful. There are parts of the book that would be great to take backpacking: the edible plants section, snares, shelters, and a few others. General things on what to do in most areas. At 4.5 x 3.2 x 0.9 inches, I'm guessing it is meant to be taken on a trip with you.

If it was compartmentalized, sure, I'd rip it apart and take what I need. It will discuss the arctic and the tropics, plus everything in between. Seriously, it's not big and the pictures and letters are small. But the book is very broad in its topics.
